La Gaspar participates in 080 BeyondCrafts at the 37th edition of 080 Barcelona Fashion

Escola municipal d’art i disseny La Gaspar has been selected to participate in 080 BeyondCrafts, within the framework of the 37th edition of 080 Barcelona Fashion, held from April 14 to 17 at Port Vell, Barcelona.

This project, promoted within the 080 platform together with Centre d’Artesania Catalunya, is conceived as a space for research and experimentation around contemporary craftsmanship. In this edition, under the creative direction of Guillermo Solas, the proposal focused on the development of a collection of bags as a working object, exploring the relationship between design, materiality and craft processes.

La Gaspar’s participation placed students in a real professional environment, fostering exchange with other sector agents and giving visibility to the creative processes developed at the school.

The piece presented is Bossa de mà Cistella (Cistella Handbag, 2023), an exercise that highlights material research and the reinterpretation of traditional techniques.

It is a handbag made from a single piece of vegetable-tanned leather, obtained through a die-cutting process from a circular shape. The piece is then subjected to a boiling process, a medieval technique that hardens the material and gives it a stable three-dimensional form.

The result is an object that evokes the shape of a basket, combining functionality with formal expressiveness. This approach underscores the potential of craftsmanship as a space for innovation, where tradition is reinterpreted from a contemporary perspective.

Education and professional context

Participation in 080 BeyondCrafts reinforces La Gaspar’s commitment to artistic education connected to professional reality and current debates in the sector, particularly in areas such as contemporary craftsmanship, sustainability and material research.

This experience enables students to develop projects in real-world contexts, strengthening both technical and conceptual skills while fostering a critical and innovative approach to design.

L’Escola municipal d’art i disseny la Gaspar ha estat seleccionada per participar a la 080 BeyondCrafts, en el marc de la 37a edició de la 080 Barcelona Fashion, celebrada del 14 al 17 d’abril al Port Vell de Barcelona.

Aquest projecte, impulsat dins la plataforma 080 juntament amb Centre d’Artesania Catalunya, es configura com un espai de recerca i experimentació al voltant de l’artesania contemporània. En aquesta edició, sota la direcció creativa de Guillermo Solas, la proposta s’ha centrat en el desenvolupament d’una col·lecció de bosses com a objecte de treball, explorant la relació entre disseny, materialitat i procés artesanal.

La participació de la Gaspar ha permès situar l’alumnat en un entorn professional real, afavorint l’intercanvi amb altres agents del sector i donant visibilitat als processos creatius desenvolupats a l’Escola.

La peça presentada és la Bossa de mà Cistella (2023), un exercici que posa en valor la investigació material i la reinterpretació de tècniques tradicionals.

Es tracta d’un bossa de mà realitzada a partir d’una sola peça de pell de vaquetilla, obtinguda mitjançant un procés de troquelat sobre un format circular. Posteriorment, la peça és sotmesa a un procés de bullit, una tècnica d’origen medieval que permet endurir el material i donar-li una forma tridimensional estable.

El resultat és un objecte que evoca la forma d’una cistella, combinant funcionalitat i expressivitat formal. Aquesta aproximació posa en relleu el potencial del treball artesanal com a espai d’innovació, on la tradició es reinterpreta des d’una mirada contemporània.

La participació a la 080 BeyondCrafts reforça el compromís de la Gaspar amb una formació artística connectada amb la realitat professional i amb els debats actuals del sector, especialment en àmbits com l’artesania contemporània, la sostenibilitat i la recerca material.

Aquesta experiència permet a l’alumnat desenvolupar projectes en contextos reals de projecció, consolidant competències tècniques i conceptuals i fomentant una mirada crítica i innovadora sobre el disseny.
